Election Riddles Solved
Thanks to CNN...
Q. Why are presidential elections always in November, and always on Tuesdays?
Q. Why are presidential elections always in November, and always on Tuesdays?
It all comes down to weather, harvests and worship.
Back when voters traveled
to the polls by horse, Tuesday was an ideal day because it allows
people to worship on Sunday, ride to their county seat on Monday and
vote on Tuesday - all before market day, Wednesday.
And the month of November
fit nicely between harvest time and brutal winter weather -- which can
be especially bad when you're trudging along by horse and buggy.
But since many voters now travel by horsepower instead of live horses, some people -- like the group Why Tuesday?
-- are pushing to move election day to a weekend day to increase the
country's historically dismal voter turnout. According to the group, 15
states do not allow early voting, and 27% of non-voters said the main
reason why they didn't vote was because they were too busy or couldn't
get time off to vote.
Q. Why do Republicans have an elephant and Democrats have a donkey?
Back in 1874, cartoonist
Thomas Nast used an elephant to depict the Republican vote in his
drawing "The Third-Term Panic." The cartoon was published in Harper's
Weekly after the owner of the New York Herald reportedly criticized the
notion of Republican President Ulysses S. Grant running for a third
term. (Grant didn't end up running in the next election).
In the drawing,
an "ass" -- depicting the New York Herald -- scares away other animals
in a forest as the elephant -- or the Republican vote -- looks like it's
about to stumble into a pit.
But that cartoon isn't where where the Democratic donkey came from. In 1828, Democrat Andrew Jackson's critics called him a "jackass" because of his populist views and his slogan, "Let the people rule."
Jackson decided to run with it -- even using images of a donkey in his
campaign ads. Later, Nast also used a donkey to depict the Democratic
party.
Q. Why are Democratic states "blue," and why are Republican states "red"?
There's nothing magical about this color scheme. Essentially, the media made it up.

Bullshit
"We’ve noted the tremendous changes on 11th St, NW in Columbia Heights. Nearly all the changes have been incredible improvements to the neighborhood. Throughout these changes there has always been one constant –El Rinconcito Deportivo. This is the first change that brings me no joy to share.
El Rinconcito Deportivo has been located at 3226 11th St, NW (between Wonderland, Bloombars and Room 11) for sixteen years. It is run by one of the nicest and most hardworking people you will ever meet – Maria Nunez. I spoke with Maria yesterday and learned that the building is selling and the restaurant will be closing one day in November. It is possible that the new owners will decide to rent her the space but that is not likely. So for fans of the Deportivo – make sure to show Maria some love over the next few weeks."

DuPont Underground
Built in 1949 and operational until 1961, this is the DuPont Underground. Former Trolley Station/fallout shelter/food court, now abandoned space beneath DuPont Circle. The trolleys are now used in Barcelona and there are still remnants of the food court. You can find 8 entrances to the tunnel if you look carefully...

Chuck Brown Ya'll
I remember first hearing Chuck Brown when I was 7 or 8 at a friend's house in the neighborhood. It became such a normal thing to hear his music and other go-go music growing up, that it took me awhile to realize that people outside of the DC area had never heard of it... "What is go-go?"

Threatened?
Claire O'Neill's recent NPR article shed some light on how threatened and affected Koala's are in Australia. Cute, yes! But, threatened? Yes! According to the article, Koala's are now threatened by dog attacks and being hit by vehicles due to their proximity to developed areas as they continue to search for shelter from a loss of habitat.
There is always (saddly) the threat of the endangered species list, but never would I expect these types of threats to strike one of my favorite furballs (just see my 3rd grade report!). Thanks for putting it into perspective and capturing the reality and devastation of what is happening to this widely-loved species.
We are all used to the cute-friendly photos of Koala's, but the photos in the article paint a different picture...

Hacienda
To be recreated in a London exhibition according to an NME article. A legendary Manchester nightclub now gone, like many others that eventually fell to the wayside. The most signifcant importance being the music scene and cultivation that was attached to these venues, who nurtured sub-culture musical genres like no other.
Who are such venues today? And will they be legendary 20 years from now?

Leap Year Facts & Finds
Who knew?
From BBC News:
From BBC News:
#5. The tradition of a woman proposing on a leap year has been attributed to various historical figures. One, although much disputed, was St Bridget in the 5th Century. She is said to have complained to St Patrick that women had to wait too long for their suitors to propose. St Patrick then supposedly gave women a single day in a leap year to pop the question - the last day of the shortest month. Another popular story is that Queen Margaret of Scotland brought in a law setting fines for men who turned down marriage proposals put by women on a leap year. Sceptics have pointed out that Margaret was five years old at the time and living far away in Norway. The tradition is not thought to have become commonplace until the 19th Century.
It is believed that the right of every woman to propose on this day goes back to the times when the leap year day was not recognised by English law. It was believed that if the day had no legal status, it was acceptable to break with tradition.
